breaker should match the load. Whenever the circuit is designed for a potential load of 20A (for example, in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and workshops) it makes sense to use 12 AWG cable. For circuits that are strictly 15A lighting circuits, using 14 AWG copper cable is advisable because it will save you money as well as being compliant with the local electrical codes.
