En effet, c\u2019est le c\u00e2ble le plus petit autoris\u00e9 par le National Electric Code pour les circuits d\u00e9riv\u00e9s de 20 amp\u00e8res ; ce sont les circuits d\u00e9riv\u00e9s alimentant la plupart des cuisines, salles de bains, garages et \u00e9quipements \u00e9lectriques. Pourtant, les questions sur ce sujet ne cessent d\u2019appara\u00eetre : combien d\u2019amp\u00e8res supporte un fil #12 ? Est-il \u00e9quivalent \u00e0 son homologue 12 AWG ? Puis-je y faire passer 25 amp\u00e8res pendant un certain temps ? Et aussi, pourquoi le fil en magasin co\u00fbte-t-il beaucoup plus cher que le THHN en entrep\u00f4t ?<\/p>\n<p>Ce manuel r\u00e9pond \u00e0 chacune de ces questions : quelles sont les dimensions physiques du 12 AWG, quelles sont les r\u00e8gles d\u2019ampacit\u00e9 selon les exigences du Code, o\u00f9 ce c\u00e2ble doit \u00eatre utilis\u00e9 et o\u00f9 il ne doit pas l\u2019\u00eatre, quel est son prix au pied pour tous les types d\u2019isolation courants, comment le fil se compare aux fils de calibre 14, 10 et 8, et o\u00f9 l\u2019acheter.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Le diam\u00e8tre du conducteur du fil en cuivre 12 AWG est de 0,0808 pouces (2,05 mm), ce qui en fait le minimum requis par le NEC pour les circuits de 20 amp\u00e8res (NEC 240.4 (D)). Le niveau maximal d\u2019ampacit\u00e9 pour ce type de conducteur est de 20 amp\u00e8res \u00e0 60\u00b0C (c\u00e2ble NM-B) et de 25 amp\u00e8res \u00e0 75\u00b0C (THHN\/THWN en conduit) selon le tableau NEC 310.15 (B) (16). Whenever the circuit is designed for a potential load of 20A (for example, in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and workshops) it makes sense to use 12 AWG cable. For circuits that are strictly 15A lighting circuits, using 14 AWG copper cable is advisable because it will save you money as well as being compliant with the local electrical codes. For loads that operate at 240V and demand from 25-30A, it is better to switch to 10 AWG. A lot of electricians make an effort not to switch wire sizes throughout the job and often use 12 AWG wire even when it is not required by the regulations since the additional cost is minimal and there is no need to fear that you will use the wrong wire.<\/p>\n<h2>Voltage Drop and Run Length<\/h2>\n<p>Voltage drop is one of the costs that go unnoticed in long wires. For a circuit carrying 20A for 50 feet, 12 AWG copper wire will show a voltage drop of about 2.8V (2.3%), which is acceptable under the National Electrical Code (NEC) recommendations of 3% for branch circuits. However, 14 AWG copper wire in a similar run will drop 4.5V (3.75%), which is above the limit. Extended wiring lowers the starting torque of motors, dims lights and can cause other problems. In practice, if we need to run 20A for distances longer than 75-100 feet, it is recommended to either switch to 10 AWG wire or use two circuits. Although aluminum is almost one-third lighter, the codes specify that aluminum wires must be two gauges larger than copper wires and that special connections must be used with this material.
