Frequently Asked Questions
What does an isolation switch do?
An isolation switch (also known as a disconnect switch) allows the direct cutting of the circuit and separating the electrical installations from the power supply for the purpose of safe maintenance. It is constructed in such a way that it does not break the electric current as it is used for safe disconnection of the circuit. Our HYGLDC series DC isolation switches are suitable for voltages of 1000V/1500V DC and currents from 160 to 1000A, providing a reliable visual isolation for photovoltaic systems and energy storage plants.
What is the difference between a load break switch and an isolation switch?
The load break switch has been designed for the purpose of safely making and breaking electricity. In contrast to a load break switch, the isolation switch is not designed for breaking load current, only for isolation when the current is already off. Isolation switches give a visible air gap while performing maintenance. The HYGLDC series is an isolation switch primarily for DC circuits where it is used as a disconnect switch in combiner boxes and inverter DC inputs.
Is isolator on load or off load?
The isolation switch, or isolator, is made to operate off-load, so its circuit must be interrupted when the switch is open or closed. The HYGLDC series makes it possible to see when a PV or battery DC circuit is isolated. With a mechanical life of 10,000 operations and a short-time withstand current of 10kA (0.1s), it guarantees safe operation of an off-load switch.
Should the isolation switch be on or off?
In regular functioning, the isolation switch ought to be in the ON position (so that the current flows) while it must be OFF during maintenance, repair, and unforeseen circumstances (thus, disconnecting the machinery from electricity). When it is OFF, the switch creates the visible interruption of electricity; thus, it assures that there is no electric connection in line with safety requirements for lockout/tagout (LOTO) practices. The HYGLDC range from our company guarantees the visible indication of its state thus allowing safe operation of solar PV systems and storage batteries.
