The task of making DC circuit isolation is different from that of making AC circuit isolation. A DC arc can’t extinguish itself like an AC arc can because it doesn’t go through zero volt level twice a cycle. Therefore equipment designed for dealing with AC cannot be relied upon to make circuits “safe.” EXD1 equipment is rated accurately with respect to the actual duties it faces: rated for 1,500 V DC to correspond to string voltages used in the current arrays, rating of 45A and arcing time of 1,000A/1s to match fault conditions on DC side. Enclosure has IP66 rating for protection against water and dust, which is important due to the fact that isolators for PV are installed outdoors on a rooftop or on different frames or integrated in combiner box instead of being put in plant room. 2-pole and 4-pole versions permit covering all string configurations necessary for every project.
